Peaberry — known in Spanish as Caracolillo — is the name of a rare physical trait of the coffee bean. Peaberry beans often grow on the ends of coffee tree branches and are characterized by their round shape, as opposed to the flat face of a regular bean. An estimated 5% of all coffee beans are Peaberry type. Cherries containing Peaberry beans yield only one bean, versus the two-bean yield of a regular cherry. Slightly smaller and denser than regular beans, their round shape also favors a more even roast. Those who enjoy Peaberry roasts speak of its sweetness, bright acid notes, and complex tastes in the cup.
